the memoir of the Chevalier de Seingalt
The reading and the lecture both discuss about the memoir of the Chevalier de Seingalt. The author of the article doubts the accuracy of the content of the memoir. However, the professor argues that the memoir is very accurate and stated her reasons which will be elaborated in the following paragraphs.
First, the author claims that the Chevalier was not as wealthy as described in the memoir because he borrowed some money while in Switzerland. The professor disagree with this point. She explained that during those periods, people had to convert their assets to money which usually took a long time. Therefore, before Chevalier got his money, he had to borrow some money to fend for his needs, host parties and gamble. As a result, he borrowed money not because he was poor but because he could not get his assets converted on time.
Second, the author insinuates that the conversations in the Chevalier's memoirs were not accurate because they feel it is not possible to remember every detail of a conversation. However, the professor argues that this point is fallacious. She pointed that Chevalier wrote everything he recalled in a conversation every night. She supported this point by stating the evidence from Chevalier's friends who confirmed that he usually wrote his memoir from a book he recorded the previous conversations.
Finally, the author suggests that Chevalier escaped the prison by bribing his well-connected friends to free him. This point was invalidated by the professor. She explained that there were some other prisoners that had richer and more well-connected friends but still could not get out of the prison. She further emphasized an Old Venician report showed that when Chevalier escaped, the ceiling in his prison cell had to be repaired due to the damages caused through his escape.
