American wood company ecocertification

Essay topics:

American wood company ecocertification

The reading and the lecture both explain the effect of the certification of American wood companies for maintaining ecologically friendly practices in wood production on the consumers. The author of the article argues that it will lead to a decrease in the number of consumers that patronize the ecocertified products based on three reasons. However, the professor refutes these arguments with explanations and evidence. His position is that the ecocertification will encourage consumers to prefer and purchase the certified woods.

First, the author claims that American consumers will not trust the advertising claims, hence, will not be motivated to purchase the products. The professor disagree with this point. He stated that the consumers do not treat all advertisement as the same. He further explained that the advertising claims by a company about its product are distinguished from those made by the independent certification agencies. Hence, the consumers trust the independent certification agencies and the consumers will buy the wood products certified by them.

Furthermore, the author of the article mentions that the ecocertified woods will be more expensive than the non-certified woods, thereby hindering the consumers from purchasing it. On the contrary, the professor believes this is false. He supported this opinion with an evidence from a study which shows that price only affects a consumer’s decision to purchase a product if the price difference between a product and its counterpart is wide. He added that if the price is less than 5%, just like that of the certified woods and non-certified woods, then other factors influence the consumer’s choice.

Finally, the author suggests that American companies should not be abreast with international development since most of their products are sold in the United States. However, the professor opposes this opinion. He argues that wood companies should also focus on international development not just for the sales of their products internationally but also to prevent foreign competition in the country.

In conclusion, the Professor refutes the claims made by the author of the article. He provided explanations and evidence for his refutation.
