the graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030
The line chart compares different kinds of energy that have been consumed since 1980 along with the amount of energy that is predicted for future use until 2020.
Overall, the consumption of fossil fuels has shown an upward trend while the use of renewable energy has experienced a period of stability. These trends are projected to continue until 2030 with fossil fuels being the dominant sources of power.
A glance at the chart reveals that the use of petrol and oil started at 35 quadrillion units and then this number showed quite a remarkable increase to approximately 45 quadrillion units in 2020 despite a slight fluctuation in the first 15 years. By 2030, the consumption of this type of energy is predicted to rise by around 5 quadrillion units. Following quite a similar pattern, the figures of natural gas and coal fluctuated for the first 40 years and reached around 25 quadrillion units in 2020. However, while the amount of coal consumed in America is projected to go up quite significantly to 30 quadrillion units in 2030, the quantity of natural gas consumed in the same period is foreseen to stay unchanged.
Turning to the other sets of data, nuclear power, solar energy and hydropower shared the same humble starting point of only around 4 quadrillion units. In the next four decades, the amount of nuclear power consumed in the US was reported to show a minimal rise to over 5 quadrillion units and this upward trend is forecast to continue until 2030. Additionally, it was speculated that the amount of solar energy, wind energy and hydropower consumed experienced a period of fluctuation in the first 25 years and then showed insignificant changes for the remaining years.
