The graph below shows different sources of air pollutants in the UK from 1990 to 2005. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph illustrates the proportions of causes that polluted the environment (industry, transport, households) and total air pollutants in the UK over a period of 15 years from 1990.
Overall, the industry was the main reason for air pollution but it showed a downward trend over years. While two remaining factors were transport and households seemed to remain stable and the air pollutants reduced significantly in results.
It could be seen that the figure for industrial source reached a peak at the beginning of 1990, around 5.4 million tones. Then, it showed a slight decrease in 1993, at 5 million tones. Finally, it plunged suddenly 2.7 times lower than the first point, at 2 million tones. Furthermore, the industry played an important role in the air problem and its number accounted for about 70% of the total volume.
In 1990, the percentages of using vehicles and housing activities were quite similar, just under 1 million tones and the same case was also depicted in 1999. But in 2005, the number of means of transport was 5 times greater than this of households. In 1996 and 2005, the figure for transport reached its highest point through the period, at 1 million tones.
