Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The reading and lecture are both about the nuclear power plant. The author of the reading states that although it is efficient to use nuclear energy over other sources, it's repercussions are far more devastating. The lecturer disagrees. He opposes the idea and attacks each of the claims made in the article. First, the author begins by stating that nuclear source acquire less fuel to run considering coal and fossil fuel yet it cannot be considered to be a effective one since there has been instances of devastation caused by this such as meltdown of Chernobyl in Ukraine and destruction of reactor in Japan. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer's position. He contends that it is safe for environment. In addition, it doe not create any harm to soil, water and it's habitat. Furthermore, solar energy rely on the environmental condition in order to run however nuclear plant require a minute amount of fuel. Therefore, it's usage is far reaching. Secondly, according to the writing, even though nuclear emit less carbon dioxide and the wastes generated from this are hard to manage as they are non-degradable in nature. On other hand, garbage from fossil fuel, coal and so on can be maintain properly. The speaker on other hand points out that there are numerous procedures to manage the wastes and it is less costly too. Finally, the reading passage also notes that as compared to conventional energy, nuclear fuel are expensive. Not only this, the transportation charge is even more costly. Hence, it is not wise to use nuclear plant. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that perhaps building plant might cost more however the maintenance cost is less. Moreover, the life span of this plant is 60 years which is huge. As we can see, the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on benefits of using nuclear energy. The speaker effectively challenges the writer's argument.
