Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and lecture are both about the mysterious decline of population in Easter island. The author of the reading proposes some ideas that depict the reason behind this. However, the lecturer disagrees with the explanation and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
Firstly, the author mentions that the boat carrying the native people also brought the rats which usually fed highly on palm tress. As a result, deforestation occured and this caused natural disasters which made the people complicate to grow food. The lecturer believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that although the rat population was burgeoning and desertification also happened nevertheless there was no short of food. In addition, most of the inhabitants were fisher and more than half of the food sources came from sea. Not only this there were also fertile soil to yield potatoes.
Secondly, according to the passage the fundamental cause of population plummet was war among inhabitants. To be more precise, exacavation has found the pieces of blade and weapon used in the war and consequently more residents died in the war. The speaker on other hand points out that those were not weapons but the constructing tools. In addition, the materials were not not sharp and pointed too. Thus, these tools could not be used in the warfare.
Finally, the reading passage notes that diminished population is percipitated by diseases from foreigner of Europe and South America. Furthermore, the contact with these people caused indigenous people suffer from detrimental heath issues and eventually population degradation resulted. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that indeed the contact with non-native resident people was deletorious, it was prior to 19th century. The population elevated since then therefore disease didn’t seem to cause population reduction.
As we can see, the author and professor holds very conflicting views on the dropping of native citizen. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
