Earthworms and its effects on soil, plants, and animals
The passage and the lecture both are about the effects of earthworms on various environmental entities such as soil, plants, and animals. The author presents points showing how earthworms are beneficial while the lecturer believes otherwise and challenges each of the points.
To begin with, the author notes that earthworms change the structure of soil allowing it to better circulate the nutrients. Moreover, it moves organic matter that rests on the surface of the soil and mixes it into dipper soil. This organic matter called duff along with increased production of humus improves the fertility of the soil. The lecturer challenges this point by saying that earthworms actually damage forests by destroying the soil cover. She states the example of her friend who while working at the fishing site, found that the land near the shoreline where the baitworms were dumped was damaged. When he dug up the forest floor, it was the earthworms causing the deterioration of the soil.
Secondly, the author points out that earthworms may help in creating channels through burrowing. Plant roots can easily penetrate the soil using these channels. Worms are a valuable source of nitrogen which fosters plant growth. The lecturer's counterargument to this point is that earthworms damage wildflowers. In that, wherever the earthworms are increased, duff disappears in a few weeks, and so do the wildflowers. In addition to that, the soil will be deprived of the nutrients released by duff which are helpful to sprout plants. Consequently, it may destroy beautiful sites that attract photographers.
Lastly, it is noted in the passage that earthworms are beneficial to animals as well because of their protein, minerals, and vitamins rich bodies. They provide food sources for many other animals including birds, snakes, mammals, and invertebrates such as beetles and snails. The speaker rejects this point by noting that the duff destroyed by earthworms is the habitat of many animals such as salamanders, insects, and spiders. In the absence of these creatures, the animals who pray on them may get affected as well. This will lead to an imbalance in the forest ecosystem.
To sum up, the author believes earthworms are conducive to soil, plants, and animals, while the lecturer believes otherwise and provides arguments supporting his position.
