The tables compare and contrast data on the changes in eight university selection priorities for male and female Taiwanese students considering studying abroad over an 11-year period from 1998 to 2008.
In general, ranking, the cost of tuition, and accommodation remained the main factors in deciding which university to go to for both sexes over this period of time.
More specifically, despite the fact that ranking was the most critical factor for both males and females in 1998 with 97% and 100% respectively, both genders focused more on the cost of tuition in 2008 (97% and 95%). By contrast, the least vital consideration for males was teaching quality at 6% in 2008, whereas their counterparts felt that teaching methods had even less significance, with only 2% of those questioned selected this. The biggest change in opinion for men was the modern teaching facilities, falling from 66% to 42%, on the contrary for the opposite gender, it was language support, with a drop from 39% to 21%.
