In the reading passage, the author proposes several evidence to illustrate Venus is inhospitable for human to live. However, the speaker in the lecture disagrees with those opinions and believes that Venus is suitable to habitat by constructing a floating station.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that atmospheric pressure at Venus's surface is so high that spacecraft and human could be crushed when landing on it. However, the lecturer deems this problem can be address with a station which is floating 50 kilometers above the surface, as atmospheric pressure decreases as the altitude increases. At this level, the pressure is similar to that of on the earth, which poses no danger to human.
Secondly, the passage says that the lack of water and oxygen in Venus's atmosphere require human transport resources from earth, defeating the purpose of building a permanent station. However, the lecturer counters this argument by emphasizing that chemical compounds could be used to process as water and oxygen in the station. Chemical substances, such as carbon dioxide, obtained in the atmosphere is able to be utilized to produce necessary resources, thus, there is no need to import water and oxygen from earth.
Finally, opposing to the author's third point that little sunlight can be used to power machines as light is blocked and reflected, the speaker contends that clouds is not that thick at the 50 kilometers above the surface. Moreover, the floating station can also use the sunlight reflected both above and below the clouds. Therefore, adequate light can be generated to power the machines and equipment in the station.
