Overall, rates in all regions are expected to increase. However, the percentage of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean is always at the highest level and it is expected to remain so until 2030.
In 1950, the proportion of city population in Latin America and the Caribbean was the highest of all regions at more than 40%. The populations in Asia and Africa are 11% and 12% respectively. In addition, the total number of people in the world accounts for about 30%.
Turning to 2000, the figure for Latin America and the Caribbean accounted for about 70%. Besides, this number increased by 38% in both Asia and Africa. The second highest percentage in this period is the whole world accounting for about 49%.
In 2030, urban populations in Latin America and the Caribbean is projected to remain at its current level, increasing to 80%. Furthermore, this number rose 51% and 59% in Asia and Africa. Additionally, this figure of the world's urban population has risen to 60% globally.
