Some students choose to work or to travel for a period of time between leaving school and going to university. However, the experience of working is more useful preparation for adult life than traveling. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Numerous young individuals choose to take a gap year to travel after high school graduation. However, some argue that work experience is more crucial in terms of preparing for adult life. I partially disagree with this statement as both bear equivalent significance.
On one hand, work experience can serve as a catalyst for career advancement. This serves as motivation for numerous students to seek temporary positions during their gap year. Studies have indicated that such a choice can enhance their professional skills, encompassing customer interaction, workplace problem-solving, and recognition of common customer preference patterns. Evidently, these proficiencies can empower young adults to gain a competitive advantage in interviews and surpass their colleagues, earning recognition from their supervisors. Ultimately, their career trajectory and social standing are likely to be elevated, aligning with the primary goal of the majority of employees.
Conversely, traveling can foster the enhancement of soft skills. Traveling gives the youth the opportunity to come out of their comfort zone and live independently. For instance, when a Vietnamese young adult chooses to travel solo to Europe, they are likely to attain independence from their parents in financial and domestic matters. This compels them to acquire budget management skills and engage in household chores such as dishwashing and floor cleaning independently. As a result, they will attain proficiency in these skills, significantly easing their post-university life.
In conclusion, I am inclined to the perspective that both work experience and travel can enhance the adult lives of students. It is advisable for them to engage in travel during their gap year and acquire work experience through internships during their time at the university.
