On the other hand, Indonesia started with a relatively low urbanization rate in 1970, with less than 15% of the population living in cities. However, Indonesia’s urbanization rate increased rapidly over the past few decades, reaching almost 50% by 2020. The predicted urbanization rates for China are also the highest among the four countries, with an estimated 55% of the population living in cities by 2030 and 60% by 2040. In contrast to the Malaysia and Indonesia, Thailand’s urbanization rate remained relatively low like Philippines, with only around 20% of the population residing in cities in 1970. Although the percentage has risen slightly over the years, India’s urbanization rate remains the lowest among the four countries at 30% urbanization at 2020 and a predicted rate of around 45% by 2040.
