The line chart shows the urban population shares in four countries in Southeast Asia from 1970 to 2020, with projections to 2040.
When discussing Malaysia, it can be observed that approximately one-third of the population resided in urban areas in the first year. It is expected that this proportion will continue to steadily increase to over 80% by 2040, which is significantly higher than any other country listed. As for Indonesia, although the urban population rate is much lower, or it can be said to be the lowest in the table (about 15%), it also exhibits a steady increasing trend similar to Malaysia. At the same time, the population rate is very low. The country’s urban population has also significantly increased compared to the beginning, surpassing Thailand in 2000 and the Philippines in 2010 to become the country with the second-highest urban population ratio. It is forecasted to reach just above 60% in the final year.
Turning to Thailand and the Philippines, the proportion of urban population in the Philippines is initially the highest, at a little over 30%. After being overtaken by Malaysia in its early years, the Philippines saw an increase in its urban population by almost half and regained its dominance in 1990. However, this dominance only lasted for a while. In a short period of time, the country’s market share gradually decreased to about 41% in 2010 and is then predicted to increase by about 10% by 2040. Thailand also follows a similar pattern but ranks last from 2000 onwards. This number starts at almost one-fifth (roughly 20%) of the city’s population before being estimated to more than double by the end of 2040.
Overall, the population living in cities in all countries surveyed is expected to increase, with Malaysia dominating the rankings for the most part. Indonesia is predicted to overtake Thailand and the Philippines to hold the second place in the final half of the timeline.
