In 1990, Europe had the highest figure with 280.2 million tourists, followed by America with 80.5 million visitors. The number of American tourists was 20.3 million higher than that of Asia and the Pacific and approximately four times greater than Africa's. The Middle East had the lowest number of foreign visitors at only 9.8 million.
By 1995, Europe's number of international tourists steadily increased, reaching a peak of 390.3 million. Meanwhile, America saw a slight decline, ending the period at 113.2 million visitors. Africa experienced a significant increase during the first ten years, surpassing 28.7 million tourists by the end of the period. Similarly, the Middle East witnessed a marginal climb of 3.7 million tourists, which continued to rise to 15.8 million by 2005.
Strikingly, in 2000, the data for America and Asia and the Pacific were nearly identical.
