The table shows information on opening dates, route kilometres and yearly passengers in millions of the underground railway systems in six cities.
Overall, railway systems in London, Paris and Tokyo have higher route kilometres and more passengers per year than those of the other cities. London’s system was opened the earliest and has the longest route. Whereas, Los Angeles’s railway system has the latest opening date. Moreover, in terms of route length and yearly passengers, Kyoto ranks last.
London’s system was first opened in 1863, more than a century earlier than that of Los Angeles (2001). It also has the highest route kilometres (394), nearly double that of the second largest subway in Paris (199). The yearly passengers of London’s system only rank third with 775 millions, less than the most used system in Tokyo (1928 millions) by over half.
Among the three modern railway systems, Kyoto’s subway, which was opened in 1981, has the shortest kilometres of route (11), less than that of the second shortest Los Angeles by a gap of 17. It also has the least passengers per year, with only 45 million, less than that of Washington DC with 144.
