Many today feel that attention spans are becoming shorter due to the prevalence of social media. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There has been a recent issue about numerous people who have lessened their focus because of social media daily use these days. Personally, I share the same perspective of this statement which I will outline several reasons in the following paragraph.
First of all, it is true that short concentration span may arouse sleep deprivation among most workers living in an unbalanced lifestyle, such as shift working or tight deadlines. Due to insufficient sleep recovery, many may encounter greater difficulty in concentration, leading to confusion and impairments in both short-term and long-term memory. Moreover, individuals who work as solopreneurs or service engage in multitasking activities. This necessity arises from the various needs to manage customer requests, prompting them to frequently shift between different tasks. As a result, they may become distractable and prone to several mental ailments, such as cerebrovascular diseases.
In contrast, social media makes people’s less attention, since its excessive use of AI induces one to be addicted, notably in automatic short video features on Instagram and TikTok. This contributes to procrastination as users tend to underestimate task time while seeking satisfaction and perceiving surplus time. Additionally, this platform engenders a Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), particularly in students driven by a desire for social recognition. They seek to be part of current trends by aligning with what is currently popular and their peer group. This distraction results in poor classroom presence and school grades.
Overall, in my point of view, engaging in social media significantly affects short attention due to AI-generated content and the fear of missing out (FOMO). This is as long as individuals should prioritize getting adequate rest.
