Many people around the world use social media to keep in touch with other people and get the news. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
The trend of using social networking sites to informed of the latest transformations and keep in touch with relatives has become prevalent in recent years. This essay will examine the advantages and disadvantages of this trend before assessing whether it is beneficial or detrimental to our society.
On the one hand, alternative forms of social media have brought numerous benefits to individuals. First and foremost, social networking platforms can deliver real-time updates, encouraging swift action in response to developments. For instance, the Vietnamese government constantly announced the movements of the Yagi storm to its residents on Facebook and other social platforms. These timely updates enabled residents in coastal areas to evacuate their homes promptly, thereby ensuring their safety. Additionally, online communications on Facebook and other social applications have empowered users to maintain connections with family members, obviating the necessity for commuting. As a result, many individuals can reclaim time for leisure activities, fostering a healthier lifestyle.
Conversely, reliance on social platforms can have several harmful effects on users. First, social platforms frequently necessitate that users disclose personal information to establish accounts for communication and entertainment, leading to significant privacy concerns stemming from cybercriminal activities. For instance, many Vietnamese Facebook users reported having their accounts compromised by unknown individuals, jeopardizing their privacy. Furthermore, alternative forms of social networking sites can disseminate false information, which adversely affects inexperienced young people. For instance, the proliferation of misinformation regarding COVID-19 fatalities compelled many young individuals to encounter serious repercussions.
In conclusion, while social media has emerged as a prevalent medium for staying informed about current events and maintaining familial connections due to its substantial benefits, I contend that this trend can be detrimental, particularly to the youth. If youth are unable to discern misleading information, their comprehension of current events may be distorted, with potential ramifications for their future.
