The graph below shows the production levels of the main kinds of fuel in the UK between 1981 and 2000.
Summarize the formation by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The given line graph illustrates variations in the amount of energy production from petroleum, coal and natural gas in the UK from 1981 to 2000.
It is noticeable that the production level of petroleum remained the highest throughout this period, and that the amount of energy generated by petroleum and natural gas ascended drastically, while production from coal saw a downward trend.
As is shown in the graph, despite some fluctuations, petroleum produced the largest amount of energy, from approximately 90 units in 1981 to 140 units in 2000. Similarly, the figure for natural gas rose precipitously from the lowest start at just below 40 units in 1981 to just over 100 units in 2000, particularly during the last decade.
By contrast, in spite of some oscillations, coal was the only main fuel whose generation declined dramatically, from roughly 80 units in 1981 to a bottom of just below 40 units in 1984, before growing to 60 units in 1986. The following years saw a steady decrease from 60 units in 1986 to nearly 32 units in 2000, during which was overnumbered by the figure for natural gas in around 1991 at 50 units.
