The pictures depict the percentages of British pupils who had mastered other languages beside English, in 2000 and 2010. In general, we can see that the percentage of French speaking pupils, along with pupils who did not master any foreign languages had decreased. Meanwhile, the groups of pupils who spoke Spanish only, who spoke another foreign language, and who spoke 2 other foreign languages had their percentages increased.
To begin with, pupils who did not speak any foreign languages were accounted for 20% in 2000, whilst ten years later this percentage dropped significantly to 10% only. Following this trend, the proportions of French only speaking pupils also decreased by 5% from its initial 15% figure in 2000. As for German only speaking pupils, the percentage did not change over the years (10%).
In contrast, the percentage of Spanish speaking pupils increased from 30% to 35%. This also happened in the group of pupils who spoke another language, in which its figure increased by 5% from its 15% figure in 2000. An increased percentage could also be seen in the group of pupils who spoke 2 other foreign languages, where in 2000 they were only made up by 15% of students, whereas in 2010 5% more pupils belonged to this group.
