The professor explains three clear arguments opposing the points stated in the reading passage about the purposes and meanings of carved stone balls.
First, the author of the passage states that carved stone balls might used as weapons or tools for hunting and fighting due to holes and grooves which were found in them, enable people to connect stone balls with a cord and throw it toward victim. Conversely, the lecturer bring up the idea that many tools that were used as weapon, for instance arrowheads, had sign in them, indicate their purpose. In addition, stone balls should be cracked or broken in the fights, but most of stone balls' surface are in a good form.
Second, it is mentioned in the reading that carved stone balls were used as benchmarks in order to measure weights. On the contrary, the professor argues this claim, and stated that carved stone balls were made from different materials which means similar carved stone ball's weight were not similar to each other. Therefore, they couldn't be used as standard measures for weighting foods or other stuffs.
Third and last, the reading passage asserts that carved stone balls used as jewelry to show owner's social status because artisan made them elaborately. In contrast, the professor disproves this idea two to the fact that some of carved stone balls had intrigued patterns while other benefits from simple designs. In addition, people used to put dead peoples' belongings into grave but archaeologists didn't find any carved stone balls in graves. Therefore, the professor repudiates this hypothesis too.
