Both the reading and lecture are about certification of woods for protecting and behaving friendly with the environment. The reading provides three reasons that American companies fail to be prosperous with the method. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all arguments dubious.
First of all, the author of reading declares that certification allows companies to advertise their products for more selling; however, consumers do not usually rely on the advertisement; hence they will not pay attention to new and improved certification label. This point is challenged by the lecturer. The professor points out that people in the United State have ability of distinguish an ordinary advertisement- related to an ordinary company- and an advertisement related to international agency with the global reputation; consequently, they will show a big passion toward certificated woods.
Secondly, the article contends that certification requires much more money; subsequently, wood companies will increase the woods' price and people can suffer from this condition, so buying low price and certificated wood will be in priority; in the contrast, the lecturer offers that based on a done research, consumers notice to other factors especially when the difference of price of two products is less than 5 percentage particularly when they be sure that a product can protect from environment.
. Finally, the reading passage states that since the most of wood companies in the United State sell their products inside of country, so they will not be able to keep up with international business; therefore certification issue will not be effect. This argument is rebutted by the professor again. He claims that American companies would like to do the foreign competition to attract foreign consumers. When they would appeal inside consumers, gradually they will be able to capture foreign clients.
