Recently some controversy has been generated a bout whether to replace ethanol with gasoline or not. The lecture claims that replacing ethanol with gasoline is a challenging idea. However, the reading states that if ethanol replaced by gasoline, that would create many problems.

The first point of dispute is if ethanol will solve the problem of the global warming or not. The lecture contents that ethanol is produced from corn plants. Plants take carbon dioxide from atmosphere and give oxygen. According to the professor, ethanol will reduce the amount carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. However. The reading opposes this point saying that ethanol will not help the problem of global warming. Ethanol increase the a mount of carbon dioxide and thus trap heat into the atmosphere.

Another controversial issue is if the production of ethanol will reduce the amount of plants for other uses. The professor says that ethanol could be produced from cellulose, it is a kind of plants not eaten by animals. However, the reading argues that production of ethanol from corn will decrease the amount of animals feed on corn.

The final point of dispute is if ethanol will compete with gasoline price or not. The lecture says that if ethanol production will increases, the prices of ethanol will decreases. According to the professor, a study shows that if the ethanol production increases three times as it is now, the prices of ethanol will decrease by 40 percent. on the other hand the author of the passage opposes this point by saying that ethanol are cheap now because the ethanol producers are getting support from the United States government. But, if the government stop supporting the producer, the ethanol prices will increase.
