The reading passage claims that there are many efforts to convince vast majorities of doctors in the United States to save and store medical information electronically on the systems than save them traditionally on papers. In fact, this method could bring many advantages, especially for doctors. However, the lecturer finds all the advantages dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.

First, the author contends that save information on papers need a vast sum of money in terms of transferring records, storage place and so forth. So, use electronic version could diminish these cost dramatically and provide an opportunity for doctors to access information on computer databases. Conversely, the lecturer underlines this idea due to the fact that many doctors keep information as emergency and most of the time they need that information with signature for legal action. Also, in electronic format, some money should be paid for storage cost.

Furthermore, the author holds the view that use papers for storing data might create some problems and increase errors. For instance, handwriting, improper transcription and so on, provide fertile ground for more mistakes. On the contrary, the professor brings up the idea that myriads of doctors use pen and paper when they visit patients. So, poor handwriting and some mistakes made by doctors could cause mistakes when introducing information on computers.

Finally, as set forth by the author electronic format can provide an opportunity for more researchers and data provided on computers allow people to have access to that information easily and quickly. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue owing to the fact that use data on computers still have some trials and tribulations thanks to privacy law in the United States. In fact, access to those information needs permission that is not granted.
