Traditionally, the prosperity of a nation was evaluated based on its economical growth. However, over the last few decades other aspects like freedom of speech, disparity between the riches and poor, social equality, physical health, security and civil rights also plays a major role in calculating the nation's prosperity. The prompt suggest that in order to measure the effectiveness of a country's leader, the best way is to measure the well-being of that country's citizens. I mostly agree with this position for two main reasons, which I will elucidate below. However, I do concede that it can be difficult to measure such a subjective factor
First of all, lets us evaluate why the traditional method of using economical growth of nation is an ineffective method to quantify a leader's potency. In previous centuries, the societies were small, less diverse and were generally led by a king or monarch. In such times, the power of an monarch was measure on extent to which they the nation's boundaries was extended. A little importance was given to the well-being of its denizens. As the boundaries extended, more the general masses suffered from scarcity of the food and widespread poverty, while the rich remained largely unaffected. The nation prospered, but life of the citizen degraded. Even in recent times, the image of a well developed nation is deteriorated when its public have to suffer from poverty. This shows that economic growth is not an effective method to evaluate a leader's position.
Secondly, over the last few decades the masses have became realized that the is need to consider more factors other than economic growth to measure a leader's stance. In the recent times when the world was affected by the covid-19 pandemic, many nation leaders were criticized for not providing public healthcare. This will sure to affect their positions in next elections. Also the leaders who fought for civil rights like Sir Martin Luther King Jr or Mahatma Gandhi who dedicated his life make India an independent nation are some of the most celebrated leaders of the society. There are more examples of leaders who went far and beyond for the rights of the people. On this note, it is fair to consider that effectiveness of a leader can be evaluated by examining the well-being of that country's citizens.
However, I do concede that measuring well-being of citizen is a subjective method. It can be easily alter by minor inconveniences. For eg. the world was largely unprepared for the pandemic and it was leaders who were blamed for this. An unanticipated event can flushed all the goodwill of leader. Also, an act of war by another nation can also severely affect the leader's position. However, I believe that even if such circumstances degrades the effectiveness of a leader, it also provide them the opportunity to display their determination to server their people and to show that those circumstances were just an hiccup.
In conclusion, the efficacy of a leader undeniably rests on the well being of the citizens. This well being is most holistically measured when economic, social and civil aspects are taken into consideration. Only a leader who succeeds in ensuring all these in balanced quantities to its citizens, would be regarded as a stellar leader.
