The following appeared in a memo from the director of student housing at Buckingham College.
"To serve the housing needs of our students, Buckingham College should build a number of new dormitories. Buckingham's enrollment is growing and, based on current trends, will double over the next 50 years, thus making existing dormitory space inadequate. Moreover, the average rent for an apartment in our town has risen in recent years. Consequently, students will find it increasingly difficult to afford off-campus housing. Finally, attractive new dormitories would make prospective students more likely to enroll at Buckingham."
The director of student housing at Buckingham College appeal for students to build a new number of dormitories, because of in Buckingham’s enrollment is increased, this increasing figure leads to next 50 years present space is inadequate. In addition to, the author, also conclude that attractive dormitories would make prospective students more likely enroll at Buckingham.
In the first argument, that Buckingham’s enrollment is growing and in coming years existing dormitory space will inadequate. First, there is no concrete proof that supports Buckingham’s enrollment double in 50 years. The growing of enrollment at Buckingham is not predictable for future. Furthermore, there is no significant figure for how many enrollments increased in recent years. If it may be true that in next 50 years enrollment will double, but the director also focus on point growing figures of enrollment students will sure enroll for student housing.
Moreover, the director also mention that average rent for an apartment increased, so, as a result of this directors believe that students finding difficulty to afford off-campus housing, consequently, students will enroll at student housing. Again, the director failed to give how much average rent for an apartment increased. If we assume that average rent for an apartment increased, but the director needs to elaborate on off-campus rent and student housing rent. So the director failed to convince claim, therefore, we cannot predict that students will not afford off-campus housing.
The director quickly jumps to the conclusion that attractive dormitories would make students enroll at Buckingham. In general, Students enroll at any college by pointing many aspects like college courses, tuition fees, scholarships, job placement etc. This is true that students also finds their college life will easily complete without any obstacle, so, they also focus on where they leave and get transportation easy. However, the director need to keep in mind that only attractive dormitory would not make students enroll for Buckingham.
In conclusion, it would have been wise for the director to consider all above points and must present concrete examples that are credible. Thus, the argument is weak and the conclusion is unwarranted.
