To begin with, on the premise of given time period, in terms of total number of jobless people the US was significantly ahead of Japan (7% vs. 2.5%). From that time on, the amount of unemployed people started to go down gradually and bottomed out in 1998 when the percentages of the unemployed reached to 5% of the whole work force of the country.
