The two bar charts illustrate the change that took place between 1970 and 2000 in relation to marriage status amongst American adults.

Over this thirty-year period, the number of married Americans decreased steadily, with the highest number at 2.5 million in 1970 and 1980, and the lowest number at 2 million in 2000. In the mean time, the pattern is different for divorces. The number of divorces in 1970 and 2000 was about the same, stood at 1 million. In 1980, the number was slightly higher, but this number was not as high as the number of people who divorced in 1990, at 1.5 million.

The second chart indicates that married Americans represented majority of the population, at 70 percent in 1970 and 60 percent in 2000. Never married occupied 20 percent of the entire population in 2000 was slight higher than the figure of never married in 1970. Widows and divorces only contribute less than 20 percent of the American population.

In short, from 1970 to 2000, about half of married American ended up in divorce. The number of never married and divorce are slightly increase.
