Essay topics:

17. The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

The line graph gives information about the percentages of the people who were 65 and above for Japan, Sweden and the USA from 1940 to 2040.

It is noticeable that the populations for all the three countries had grown older and were predicted to keep the trend over the period shown. Meanwhile, the percentage of older people in Japan decreased but would experience a surge and become the highest one among the three countries.

The USA had the highest proportion of the population aged 65 and above from 1940 to 1990, with an increasing percentage from 9 to 14. The proportion of Swedish elderly saw a similar trend during this time, rose from 7% to 13%. The data about Japanese, However, demonstrated a decline in the proportion of people over 65 from 5% to 3%.

In 2040, there would be a dramatic surge for Japan, and this country would have the largest proportion of old people, with a prediction of 27% of Japanese aged 65 and above. In Sweden, over 25% of people might older than 65, which would be higher than the percentage of Americans (23%).
