The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line chart compares the information about the percentage of population aged 65 and older in Japan, Sweden and America in one century.
In general, it is predicted that there would be an upward trend in this group of population in all three countries. It is clear that, while in 1940 Japan was the country having lowest percentage of citizen aged 65 and over, it is expected to have the highest one in 2040.
In 1940, proportion of 65 years old and older population in three countries were under 10%, with the lowest one was Japan, at 5%, followed by Sweden and USA respectively. The percentage of this group of citizen in Sweden is forecasted to see a fluctuation and peak at around 26% in 2040.
If we look at the figure of USA, there was an increase in about the firts 42 years before leveling off at about 14% until 2020. In the last 20 years, there is a predictation that this figure will increase to about 23% and be the lowest one compared to other countries. In contrast, Japan saw a slight decrease until around the year 1990 before hitting a trough and is expected to be the country that has the highest percentage of population aged 65 and over in 2040, about 27%.
