The report derives from the presented side-bar chart delineating an average family expenditure from their weekly income in a particular country in 1968 and in 2018.
Generally speaking, the spending pattern of households had changed significantly in five decades. Housing and recreation overtook food as the principal sources of pay-out in 2018.
A glance at the graph reveals that, food used to consume about 35% of households weekly income in 1968. In 2018, this figure declined to almost half at 17% while residence and leisure increased to almost double with 18% and 22% respectively. Transportation is another category, which saw a growth approximately from 8% to 13%. Payment structure on residential goods remained equal with under 10% in both years.
On the other hand, all the other categories were never as high as 10% in 1968. Moreover, spending on fuel and power as well as on personal items demonstrated a slight decrease of about 2% and 4% respectively. In terms of apparel and footwear, the number in 2018 was almost half compared to 1958 (around 10% and 20% respectively).
