The bar chart illustrates the proportion of boys and girls who took part in various sports in New Zealand in 2002.
As can be seen from the chart, there were significant differences between the percentage of boys and girls who participated in most of these sports. However, the ratio who played basketball and tennis was similar.
The greatest rate of boys was recorded in the soccer area with nearly 25%, which was five times higher than that of girls. Meanwhile, Netball came top of the girl list whereas this activity was on the other end of the scale in their counterparts (25% compared with 1% in turn).
Approximately 3% and 13% of boys played athletics and swimming respectively – a figure which was lower than girls for both sports. While the proportion of boys engaging in Marital arts, cricket, and other is significantly higher than that of girls. In contrast, as many boys played basketball and tennis as girls.
