The chart below provides details about the ownership of electrical appliances and the number of hours spent on housework for the period of 1920 to 2019.
The graphs provide information about variance in electrical appliance ownership, along with the number of hours spent on house chores during the period 1920-2019 in a
single country. Overall, by 2019 refrigerators and vacuum cleaners are more commonly found in households when compared to washing machines, which supports the reducing
trend in time spent in housework.
While refrigerators and vacuum cleaners grew to become commonly found appliances in every household by 2019(100% for both), however, in 1920 no one owned a refrigerator
but a vacuum cleaner was owned by 30 per cent. On the other hand, washing machines still remain an option, not a necessity, only increasing from 40%(1920) to 75%(2019)
with a slight dip observed in 1980.
The number of hours spent completing daily house chores saw a significant decrease, reducing from 50 hours spent per week(1920) to just 10 hours per week(2019). The
the highest decrement was seen during the period 1920(50 hours) to 1960(20 hours), during the same time significant inclination was observed towards all the electrical
appliances.
