The chart below shows the different levels of post-school qualifications in Australia and the proportion of men and women who held them in 1999.

The chart illustrates the percentage of males and females possessing five different categories of diplomas in Australia in 1999.

Over the period shown, more men tended to earn postgraduate diploma, master’s degree and skilled vocational diploma than women, while women qualified more in undergraduate and bachelor degree.

In 1999, there were three fields that men owned more qualifications. The proportion of males having skilled vocational diploma was around 90%, which was ninefold that of female counterparts. Besides, men made up 70% and 60% of total people possessing postgraduate diploma and master’s degree, while women accounted for only 30% and 40% respectively.

Undergraduate diploma and bachelor’s degree were two fields experiencing the larger proportion of women. Specifically, the percentage of females having undergraduate diploma (70%) doubled that of male counterparts (35%), whereas there was only a slight difference at around 5% between two genders’ statistics regarding bachelor’s degree.
