The chart below shows the global sales of different kinds of digital games from 2000 to 2006.
The bar chart depicts the worldwide citizens’ expenditures on various categories of video games over 7 years between 2000 and 2006.
Overall, handheld games stayed the most popular, outnumbering the other three by 2 to 5 times over the period. Interestingly, the market had also been diversified by 2006 with mobile phone and online games joining the race, along with the existing console and handheld games.
In terms of handheld games, its revenue gradually increased by one-third over time, from just under 12 billion dollars to roughly 18 billion dollars. On the other hand, console games experienced an inverse trend with a steady decrease over 7 years, hitting its low of 3 billion dollars in 2006.
Regarding the new kinds of games entering the market, online games were the first to join in 2001, followed by mobile phone games appearing a year later. Although most of the time their figures were either equal or the mobile phone’s were higher, online games’ sales accelerated in the final year and exceeded that of mobile phones, making up approximately 9 and 7 billion dollars respectively.
