The bar chart compares the proportion of England’s and Wales’s families possessing a house and those living in a rented property from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, living in owned accommodation was a growing popularity among households in England and Wales, while the percentage of households in rented accommodation witnessed a downward trend throughout the period shown.
Between 1918 and 1953, starting at over one-fifth, the proportion of those buying themselves a house experienced an increase of 10% in the next 21 years then leveled off until 1953 before rising steadily and reaching its record high in 2001, at under 70%. Surprisingly, over a decade, the figure for households locating in owned area declined by a mere 6%, to nearly two-third at the end of the period.
By 1961, the percentage of families living in rented property had gone down roughly one-tenth from a large portion of 78% and had subsequently remained stable in 14 years. Locating in hired accommodations became less favorable since the figure for households in those places saw a considerable fall from 1961 to 1991. Interestingly, in 1971, half of English’s and Wales’s population owned their houses, while the remaining preferred to live in rented properties. After hitting the lowest point in 2001, there was finally a recovery in the proportion of renters 10 years later.
