The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given bar chart illustrates the proportion of the people living in houses which were in owned and rented accommodation within the countries of England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the households in the owned accommodation rose, while those in the rented one fell. It is also noticeable that the households in the owned houses were lower than those in the rented ones in the first 43 years, but higher in the last 30 years.
Concerning the period of time from 1918 to 1961, the people living in the rented houses were far higher than the ones in the owned accommodation. In the beginning year, the ratio of the people in the owned housing to the rented one was 1:3. In 1939 and 1953, that ratio was about 1:2. During the final year of this period, although the households in the owned housing grew, it was still not higher than the figure for the rented housing people.
However, there was a dramatic change throughout the second half of the period. In 1971, the proportions of both subjects were equal, and the percentage for the owned housing was higher than its counterpart over the course of 30 years. The households in the owned units ranged from 60% to around 70% during this period, and those in the rented ones from around 30% to 40%.
