The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households in the categories of owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
In general, it can be seen that over the said period, the percentage of owned households rose noticeably while the reverse was true for that of rented households.
In 1918, households only accounted for around 23% of owned accommodation, which was about one third of the figure in the rented accommodation category. However, the gap between the two proportions was gradually narrowed in the following years before standing equally at the 50-percent mark in 1971.
Afterwards, until 2001, the percentage of owned households rose to peak at nearly 70% whilst that of rented households hit the bottom at a little over 30 percent. A decade later, the former dropped slightly to 64% whereas the later experienced a 6% rise.
