Overall, it can be seen from the graph that there was a noticeable net decrease for the percentage of households in rented accommodation. However, the opposite was true for the rate of homeownership over the same period of time.
In details, in 1918, approximately 80% of rented accommodation was households, which was 3 times the figure for owned property. Thereafter, the gap had been gradually narrowed as the two figures correlated negatively before standing equally at the 50-percent mark in 1971.
Afterwards, while households increasingly accounted for greater proportions in owned property and reached a peak at slightly less than 70% in 2001, the percentage of rented households dropped steadily before hitting its trough at around 31% in the same year. A decade later, while the former declined moderately to around 65%, the latter reemerge to finish at slightly higher than 35 percent.
