The two pie charts compare the differences in the proportions of eight types of waste disposal in a nation in 1960 and 2011.
Looking from an overall perspective, it can be seen that after 51 years, people threw away fewer papers, textiles, and other types of waste, while the remaining waste experienced an increase in the proportion of waste disposal. In addition, disposed metal, glass, and green waste shared almost the same percentage in the two mentioned years.
According to the charts, the rate of textiles being disposed of in 1960 was 17%, however, this figure dropped by 6% to 11% in 2011. The respective discard rates of paper and other types of waste in 1960 were 25% and 9%. After 51 years, these figures fell to 15% and 4%, respectively. The proportion of green waste and glass waste in 1960 remained unchanged when compared to that in 2011. Besides, metal waste only witnessed a minor increase of 1% from 8% in 1960 to 9% in 2011.
Turning to the remained waste, which experienced some significant increases in terms of waste disposal rate. The amount of food being wasted accounted for 12% in 1960 and raised dramatically to 21% in 2011. People in 2011 also discarded twice the amount of wood compared to the other year, with the disposal rate increasing twofold from 4% in 1960 to 8% in 2011. Finally, the figure for plastic waste grew by 10% from 8% in 1960 to 18% in 2011.
