Essay topics:

The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.

The first line graph depicts fluctuations in the percentage of families possessing electrical devices in one particular nation, whilst the second indicates the amount of time spent on cleaning. All the figures given were from 1920 to 2019.

At the first glance, we can observe that all the three factors mentioned in the first chart experienced upward trends, whereas the opposite was true for the figure in the second one. Although there were no households using refrigerators in 1920, the great majority of dwellers owned fridges and vacuum cleaners in 2019.

Looking closer, the percentage of houses taking possession of refrigerators dramatically rose from 0 percent in 1920 to approximately 90 percent in 1960. Following that, it speeded down a bit and climbed at a steady rate until reaching its peak in 1980. This figure remained constant at 100 percent until the last year of the period of time shown. Besides, the proportion of claim ship of vacuum cleaners sustainably increased over the first 60 years, from 30 percent in 1920 to 90 percent in 1980. In the next 20 years, this figure showed its continuous upward trend when all families use vacuum cleaners in 2000 and stayed unchanged to 2019. Beginning with the highest point among all three categories, the percentage of washing machines owned, however, came in last in 2019. Between 1920 and 1960, this figure went up from 40 percent to 70 percent before declining to about 65 percent in 1980. During the remaining time, it rose with moderate speed and reached its peak at around 75 percent in 2019.

In 1920, there were half of a hundred hours spent on cleaning every week, but by 1980, this number dramatically dropped to only 15 hours. Following, it stabilized for the 20 remaining years, after which it fell continuously to slightly above 10 hours per week in 2019.
