The diagram below shows how solar panels can be used to provide electricity for domestic use

The pictorial diagram illustrates the basic components of the beneficial energy business model that nowadays is in vogue, namely, prosumption (consumes' involvement in the production process) as well as its operating mechanism.

As depicted, generating electricity through solar panels consists of five major parts, namely, 1) solar panels, 2) inverter, 3) electrical panel, 4) utility meter and, 5) utility grid.

Installed at the proper angle and position at the rooftop, solar panels are the heart of the system in which the energy from sunlight is captured and converted to the DC form of power. However, the main form of electricity in domestic applications is AC, thereby converting DC to AC power by Invertor. The final part of the system is the electric panel, which acts as a hub to distribute electricity based on domestic demand.

Since both production and consumption of energy are not constant, the utility meter is used to return the extra generated power to the grid. Conversely, if the consumption exceeds the production the utility grid will compensate for the power shortage.
