The diagram illustrates the various parts of a neuron and the way it works.
It is clear that there are five parts making up a neuron. The processes of receiving and passing messages inside and between neurons are finished by them collaboratively, from dendrites to terminal buttons.
At one end of a neuron, cell body, or soma, is surrounded by a number of brunch-like structures. Most of them become thinner towards their ends which are called dendrites. They act as receptors of messages from other cells. One of the brunches has no dendrites and this is called axon. Messages are passed away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles or glands through axon. For example, action potential are transmitted in the form of electrical signal traveling down the axon. And axon is covered with myelin sheath which assist in accelerating neural impulses.
When messages come to the other end of the neuron, terminal buttons on the the ends of the brunches are responsible for posting them to another neuron. Terminal buttons set up junctions with other cells so that information can be received by dendrites from another neuron; here the work cycle of neurons begins anew.
