The diagrams below present the estimates and projections of world population from the US Census Bureau.
The two line charts illustrate the prediction of the total population in the world in the 100-year period by the US Census Bureau.
Overall, the population tends to grow steadily during the period shown, while its growth rate will decline.
In the first 20 years from 1950 to 1970, the world population was slightly increased by around 1 billion to nearly 4 billion and remained constant at that level in 1980. Since then, the figure for the total people increased dramastically and doubled in 2000, at 6 billion. By the end of this period shown, it is estimated to climb over 9 billion citizens.
On the other hand, the trend observed in the population growtth rate is sighnificantly different. The growth of total population in the world greatly fluctuated and increased to reach its highest in 1970, at 2%. From then, it decreased remakably to 1% in 2020 and is projected to keep dropping by 2050, where the figure for it is likely to be as low as 0.5%.
