Free time activities of the elderly in The United States from 1980 to the present

The given chart illustrates the percentage of spare time activities often done by old people in the US from 1980 to 2010.
As can be seen from the chart, upward trends were recorded in the proportions of four out of five activities in the period of 30 years. Another noticeable point is that the percentage of reading witnessed the most dramatic change.
Between 1980 and 1990, both the proportions of watching TV and surfing the Internet increased slightly by 5%. Meanwhile, there was a considerable rise from 0% to 40% in the percentage of reading, about two times the figure growth in the reading line. Whereas, a sharp fall of 20% was recorded in the proportion of visiting the theatre.
From 1990 onwards, the proportions of hiking, surfing the Internet and watching TV continuously rose in the next decade by the same percentages in the previous ten years before the figures for hiking and surfing the Internet witnessed a burst of 20% and 30% respectively. By contrast, after declining notably by 20%, the percentage of old people choosing to read books in their free time increased sharply from 20% to 60%. There was a slight raise of 15% in the percentage of going to the theatre.
