The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and
water consumption in two different countries.
The line graph compares the volumes of water used for three purposes worldwide from 1900 to 2000, and the table provides water usage in Brazil and Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000.
Overall, all sectors, agriculture, industry and household water usage, increased considerably during the surveyed years, and Brazil consumed more water per person than Congo.
Closer examination, Agriculture was the most essential purpose of water consumption around world during the surveyed period, from 500 km3 in 1900 to 3000 km3 in 2000. The water usage of Industry and household were negligible in the first half century. However, Industrial water use recorded the rapid growth in the next half century, reaching the peak at 1200 km3 in 2000, while domestic water usage reported slight increase, hitting the top at approximately 400 km3 in 2000.
With regard to the table, in 2000, Brazil's population was around 30 times of Congo's. Moreover, water consumption per person in Brazil, at 359 m3, was much higher than that in Congo, at 8 m3, and it could result from Brazil having substantially larger irrigated land (26,500 km2) than Congo (100 km2).
