The graph and table below show the number of fishers in millions for different regions in 1980, 1990, and 2000, and the world's top exporters of fish in 2000.
The bar chart compares the number of fishers in five continents between 1980 and 2000, and the table shows the ten highest ranking fish exporting countries in 2000.
Overall, Asia had the highest number of fishers in all three years - 1980, 1990, and 2000, and Thailand, an Asian country, became the top fish exporter in 2000.
In 1980, the number of fishermen from Asia was 9 million, which was just three times higher than that of other countries. By 2000, however, the population of fishers in Asia had become 23 million, making it the region with eight times greater than others in the number of fishermen. By contrast, only marginal increases occurred in the figures for the other four continents, from 2 million to 3 million.
Turning to the table, it can be seen that the fish market was also dominated by Asin countries with Thailand ranking first, and China, Taiwan, Russia, Indonesia, and Korea being fourth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth respectively. However, the second and fifth places were taken by two European countries, Norway and Denmark, while the third and sixth spots on the table were occupied by two countries in North America, the USA, and Canada.
