The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.
The graph provides information about the expenditure of energy by fuel in America since 1980 and predictions towards 2030.
Overall, petrol and oil and coal showed a steady but significant rise throughout the period. Despite fluctuations, natural gas, nuclear and solar and wind energy consumptions experienced a gradually increase, whereas hydropower showed a downward trend.
In 1980, the energy consumption rates of petrol and oil were 35q and had some fluctuations and hit a low to about 33q from 1985 to 1995. In the following year, both fuels increased sharply and predict it will hit the highest point about 50q in 2030. Meanwhile, coal and natural gas initially were at 15q and 20q, respectively. The rate of natural gas fluctuated from 1985 to 2015, while coal increased sharply throughout the period, exceeding the natural gas’ rate in 2015 and will continue to rise to about 29q in the year 2030.
In early 1980, the rates of three remaining energies were at about 4q. A moderate increased in nuclear energy about 6q in 2005 and remained steady in 2015 and will rise to the highest point around 6q in 2030. In the meantime, solar and wind and hydropower energy experienced some fluctuations to almost 4.5q, and 2q in 2015, respectively, and will remain steady to 2030.
