The graph below shows the amount of goods transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002.
The line graph illustrates the number of products conveyed using four different types of transport systems (road, water, rail and pipeline) in time period between 1974 and 2002 in the UK. Units are measured in million tonnes.
Overall, the biggest amount of goods was transported by road throughout the whole time period, whereas the least used way for transferring products was pipeline. Furthermore, there was an increase in the amount of conveyed good for all ways of transportation, except for rail which stayed the same.
With regard to road transportation, it experienced increase from about 70 million tonnes to just below 100 tonnes. Likewise, the amount of goods conveyed using water grew for approximately 30 million tonnes (from just below 40 in 1974 to around 70 in the final year). Turning to pipeline transportation, it experienced a relatively small increase in the amount transported during the first 8 years from around 5 million tonnes to 15, then plateaued for about 10 years (till 1992), grew to just above 20 million tonnes, reaching its peak in 1995 and stayed fixed in the final years.
On the other hand, railway transportation began at 40 million tonnes in the first year, fluctuated throughout the period, hitting a low of 25 million tonnes in 1995, after increasing back to 40 million tonnes in 2002.
