The graph below shows the quantities of goods transport in the UK between 1974 to 2002 by four different modes of transport

The line graph compares four different transport modes used in the UK between 1974 and 2002. The graph illustrates the quantities of goods transported using these transport modes during the same time period.

Overall, roadway was the most popular mode of transport in the UK in 1974. Its use grew overtime, followed by waterway whose use remained stagnant for almost 20 years from 1978 to 1998 before reaching a peak. By contrast, railway and pipeline were nowhere near as popular as either road or water transport.

In 1974, road transport was used to transport approximately 75 million tonnes of goods in the UK as opposed to roughly 80 million by 1978. Despite seeing a slight fluctuation in the course of time, roadway still saw a rise between 1982 and 1990 during which it was used for transporting just over 80 million tonnes of goods. However, it dipped to 78 million tonnes by 1994 before increasing dramatically to around 100 million tonnes of commodity transported using this means of transport.

Railway was slightly less popular than water transport as it was used for transporting around 38 million tonnes of goods in 1974 when 40 million tonnes of goods were transported into the UK. Meanwhile, railway became the second most popular means of transport rising to nearly 60 million tonnes of goods transported using it. This is actually twice as much as were transported by waterway in 1990.

Pipelines remained the least popular mode of transport throughout three decades, with its use in transport growing from only 5 million tonnes in 1974 to approximately 25 million tonnes by the end of the period.
