Overall, the spending on books in Germany, France, Italy and Austria increased dramatically over the period. It is also noticeable that Germany spent the most on books among other countries.
In 1995, Germany spent at $80 million on books, which was by far the highest spending and the figure fluctuated slightly in the succeeding 4 years, before increasing to reach a high of just under $100 million in 2005. France's spending started at nearly $60 in 1995, after which the number rose steadily to peak at just under $80 million in 2005.
Between 1995 and 2003, the amount of money spent on reading materials in Italy hovered from nearly $50 million to just below $60 million, before climbing to around $70 million in the final year. Austria had the lowest spending from 1995 to 2001 between almost $30 million and $40 million but went up significantly and overtook Italy to become the third highest spender on books at approximately $70 million in 2005.
